CYO Athletics at St. William Parish

Todd March 21st, 2010

The St William Dads’ Club is proud to sponsor and support the CYO Athletic Program at St William.  ALL Parishioners of St William that have kids in grades 3rd through 8th are encouraged to take a look at what the CYO Athletic Program has to offer.  Our Fall Volleyball program has grown to four teams for the girls in the 4th thru 8th grade. Each year they all play in tournaments and have a regular season schedule.  The Freshman, JV,  and Varsity Football teams are open to 3rd thru 8th graders.  Last year the Varsity Football Team played in the City CYO Championship game at Ford Field.   Our Intramural Basketball program is open to all 2nd thru 4th graders, this gives the young player a chance to develop their skills and learn the game of basketball in a relaxed come-when-you-can-program.  The CYO Basketball program is for the boys and girls in 5th thru 8th grade.  This past season, once again, the Varsity Boys qualified for the CYO play-offs and many of our team played in additional tournaments over the course of the season. Our CYO JV and Varsity Baseball teams are ready to kick off their 4th season.  The cost for each participant is very reasonable considering the quality of play in each sport.  Most sports are only $60 per player, which includes uniforms and equipment.  Plus, the Dads’ Club provides scholarships for those in need- – we want each child to have an opportunity to play in a sport.  Find out more about CYO Athletics on our website at www.saintwilliam.net or contacting the Athletic Director, Todd Diffenderfer at AD@saintwilliam.net or 248-881-3132.

Exciting Play Marks the End of the Regular Season

Tom Convery February 23rd, 2010

For excitement, drama, and a great test of our skill and progress, you can’t hope to do much better than finish the final week of the CYO regular season at home against St. James.  Winning 3 out of 7 is not what we had hoped for, but the games were all extremely competitive and all of our coaches and players should be justifiably proud of everything that they have accomplished this season.  Those teams not in post-season play can get some well-deserved rest before coming back to the Activity Center on Tuesday, March 9 to celebrate at our Basketball Banquet from 6:30 pm to 8:30 p.m..

Varsity boys #1 will be in the playoffs.  The first round of games will be on Saturday February 27, 2010  against St. Sebastian at 1:45 p.m. at St. Sebastian.  The second round will take place on Sunday, February 28, 2010.

Coach Ottinger’s JV Girls #1 will be in a post season tournament at St. Raphael in Garden City at 5:30 on Sunday, February 28.

Coah Moscone’s JV #1 Boys will be playing in Our Lady of efuge’s tournament on Friday, March 5 at 8:00 p.m.

Practice for the next two weeks will be as follows:
Mon/Wed          4:00 to 5:45       JV Girls #1
Mon/Wed          5:45 to 7:15       JV Boys #1
Mon/Wed          7:15 to 9:00ish   Varsity Boys #1

Note that we do have available gym time for Tuesdays and Thursdays should an extra practice session be necessary to prepare for post-season play.

Reminder: ‘Snow Day’ Policy

Tom Convery February 9th, 2010

With our first winter storm approaching, we want to make certain that everyone understands our ‘snow day’ policy.  We DO  NOT  AUTOMATICALLY  CANCEL  PRACTICES  WHEN  WALLED  LAKE  SCHOOLS HAS A SNOW  DAY.  Our basketball program is not a school program and is not shut down as the school programs are in the event of a ‘snow day’.  If Walled Lake Schools has a ‘snow day’, our athletic director will make a decision as to whether or not to have scheduled practices or games after evaluating the situation with the basketball director.  Generally, we will wait until late morning to evaluate the storm, clean-up progress, and passability of the roads.  Traffic for our evening activities is always better than rush hour/morning traffic, roads are usually clearer, and conditions generally better so more often than not we will maintain our schedule even in cases where the school system has cancelled.  We DO NOT take safety issues lightly though, so please check e-mail and the web site throughout a ‘snow day’ (after noon) and check your phone answering system for messages as we will ‘fan out’ and attempt to contact all affected families in the event that our regularly scheduled practice/game is cancelled.  It is also possible that a late day storm which did not affect school would cause us enough concern to cancel a practice so if the snow is flying check your answering machine/e-mail/website before going out.

Preliminary forecasts lead us to believe that the roads will be in pretty good shape by late tomorrow afternoon.  We do not foresee any cancellations of tomorrow afternnon/evening practices unless the weather is more severe than expected.  Please drive safely tomorrow and give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going.

Varsity Boys #1 ALL Contribute to Victory!

Joe Dulzo January 24th, 2010

The Varsity Boys #1 team kept their record unblemished (6-0 league, 9-0 overall) by cruising to a 36-3 road victory over St. Joseph. Despite a relatively slow start, the game was never really in question with the Crusaders leading 15-3 at half time, and then holding St. Joseph scoreless in the second half. All Crusaders contributed to the victory with every member of the team getting into the scoring column.

Team Play Secures Another Victory for JV Boys #1

Tom Convery January 24th, 2010

Few of the fans who have followed our JV Boys (#1) through the season will probably note the improved style of team play which they have developed.  Their team play is paying dividends in the second half of the season as their offense is increasingly consistent in productivity.  Saturday’s commanding 35-16 win over their hosts, the Jaguars of St. Joseph improves their division record to 7-1 as they prepare for what will be a tough road game against Our Lady of Victory.  The Cougars were only narrowly defeated at home in the first half of the season and will look to defend their home court and unseat the Crusaders who currently  top their division.  Come out to OLV in Northville next Saturday at 5:45 p.m. to cheer them on to another win.

Varsity Girls Rewarded for their Perseverance

Tom Convery January 24th, 2010

Our squad of mostly seventh grade girls has struggled through the first half of the season trying to match up with #1 teams composed  mainly of bigger, more experienced eighth graders.   Having lost to St. Joseph by 1 point in our own gym to begin division play in December, Coach Dulzo’s girls were focused on returning the favor on Saturday in South Lyon.  It was a tight game which saw numerous lead changes and was tied at 10-10 going into the second half.  The second half saw an intensified offensive game for both the Jaguars and our Crusaders.  When the final buzzer sounded St. William Varsity Girls had secured their first victory of the season with a 27-25 score over St. Joseph.

JV Girls #1 Post Win Against St. Joseph

Tom Convery January 23rd, 2010

The JV Girls #1 team appeared to be still half asleep as they moved slowly and defended weakly falling to a quick 0-4 deficit in the first 55 seconds of their match up with St. Joseph this morning.  They quickly snapped out of their stupor, however, and began playing the alert basketball which we have come to appreciate out of Coach Ottinger’s squad.  With only one minute and 25 seconds remaining in the half, St. Joseph went to the free throw line to score their 5th point of the game closing the widening gap in the score to 22-5.    The first half ended with St. William leading by a 24-7 margin.  The second half saw tighter defense and less scoring with the Crusaders remaining in control to close out the game with a victory. Final score 30-13.

JV Boys #2 Extend Winning Streak

Tom Convery January 23rd, 2010

This morning the Junior Varsity Crusader Boys #2 team travelled to South Lyon to begin the second half of the season schedule.   The improvements in both St. Joseph and our St. William boys is evident as the season progresses.  Our boys have improved their defensive skills and, even more markedly, their ball-handling and passing skills enabling them to score 31 points against St. Joseph on the road compared to only 18 points at home back at the start of the season.   With this 31-9 victory, Coach Goerss and his boys improve their division record to 5-3 and extend their current winning streak to 4 games.
