CYO Athletics at St. William Parish

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

The St William Dads’ Club is proud to sponsor and support the CYO Athletic Program at St William.  ALL Parishioners of St William that have kids in grades 3rd through 8th are encouraged to take a look at what the CYO Athletic Program has to offer.  Our Fall Volleyball program has grown to four teams for the girls in the 4th thru 8th grade. Each year they all play in tournaments and have a regular season schedule.  The Freshman, JV,  and Varsity Football teams are open to 3rd thru 8th graders.  Last year the Varsity Football Team played in the City CYO Championship game at Ford Field.   Our Intramural Basketball program is open to all 2nd thru 4th graders, this gives the young player a chance to develop their skills and learn the game of basketball in a relaxed come-when-you-can-program.  The CYO Basketball program is for the boys and girls in 5th thru 8th grade.  This past season, once again, the Varsity Boys qualified for the CYO play-offs and many of our team played in additional tournaments over the course of the season. Our CYO JV and Varsity Baseball teams are ready to kick off their 4th season.  The cost for each participant is very reasonable considering the quality of play in each sport.  Most sports are only $60 per player, which includes uniforms and equipment.  Plus, the Dads’ Club provides scholarships for those in need- – we want each child to have an opportunity to play in a sport.  Find out more about CYO Athletics on our website at www.saintwilliam.net or contacting the Athletic Director, Todd Diffenderfer at AD@saintwilliam.net or 248-881-3132.

The Week Ahead in Basketball: December 13-20

Monday, December 14th, 2009

We had some exciting basketball as our teams squared off against OLV this past weekend. Congratulations to all of our teams for tenacious play through the entire 24 minutes of regulation play (or 30 minutes for those who went into double overtime). This coming weekend we play AWAY at All Saints in Canton in what will probably be our biggest test of this young season. Please consider arriving for the entire St. William game preceeding yours and/or the entire St. William game following your game to help cheer our children on to victory. ( Map:Click Here ) Note the game times well.:

The Week Ahead in Basketball: Nov 29 – Dec 6

PRACTICE CHANGES

Normal practice schedule for ALL teams this Monday-Thursday.  No practices on Friday (home games).

Practices on Wednesday and Thursday will be limited to the south side of the Activity Center.

SKILLS CLINICS

Skills clinics will be offered 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. this Tuesday for CYO only and Friday for CYO & Intramural players.

Division play schedules will be distributed today under a separate e-mail.

TOURNAMENT  PLAY

The Thanksgiving tournaments went well this week:

Varsity Boys #2 (Coach Joe Dulzo)

The boys easily defeated Holy Family  (31-16) to bring home the Championship Trophy from the St. Robert Bellarmine Thanksgiving tournament. They had previously defeated St. Anselm 27-25 in first round action and St. Valentine by a score of 34-18 to advance to play for the tournament championship.

Varsity Girls (Coach John Dulzo)

Our girls drew a tough first round opponent in St. Valentine at the St. Robert Bellarmine Thanksgiving Tournament and lost the first round game 9-29.  The second round game played Sunday, November 22 was encouraging as the 7th grade girls played without “the bigs” as the eighth graders attended a confirmation workshop.  Even without the extra help in the paint the girls held tough losing 14-19 to division rival Our Lady of Victory.

Varsity Boys #2 (Coach Steve Dykstra)

The Varsity Boys #2 chalked up a run-away victory against Sacred Heart (Dearborn) Varsity Boys #3 in the first round of the St. Sebastian Thanksgiving tournament.  They suffered a disarming defeat in the second round to Divine Child  (16-41).

JV Girls #1 (Coach Jim Ottinger)

The girls rebounded from a tough loss to Our Lady of Victory (12-22) in the opening round of the St. Robert Bellarmine Thanksgiving Tournament with a stunning victory over division rival Holy Family in the consolation bracket of the tournament.  Our girls went on to become Consolation Champions with a very lopsided victory over St. Linus (25-6). Our girls can be very pleased with their consolation trophy considering that St. Robert narrowly edged out St. Linus in the first round (12-8) to make their way to the championship game only to lose to our first round opponent, Our Lady of Victory.

JV Boys #1 (Coach Mike Moscone)

Defeated St. Joseph (24-22) in the opening round of the Our Lady of Refuge Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday.  They fought a close battle through 3 quarters against St. Lawrence on Saturday but ended up falling in the fourth quarter and being eliminated from the tournament.

JV Girls #2 (Coach Peg Convery)

The JV girls began the tournament with victories in two games which showcased some great offense (21-10 over Cabrini and 18-10 over All Saints).  In the St. Sebastian thanksgiving tournament championship, our girls ended up on the losing side of a defensive battle with Divine Child (4-8).  The game was deadlocked 2-2 through the first half anf 4-4 through most of the second half.  We can all be proud of our girls and the Second Place Trophy which they brought home from the tournament.

JV BOYS #2 (Coach Matt Goerss)

We tried to get the boys registered in two different tournaments, but everyone must be afraid of them.  We are busy trying to line up some good scrimmage games (like the one this week vs. St. Patrick, White Lake) and will have them in a Christmas tournament.

SUNDAY:          INTRAMURALS 1:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

TOURNAMENT  PLAY

The Thanksgiving tournaments have gone relatively well so far:

Varsity Boys #2 (Coach Joe Dulzo)

The boys shooting percentage was not where we would like it, but they managed to defeat St. Anselm 27-25 in first round action at the Saint Robert Bellarmine Tournament.  They advanced to play St. Valentine Sunday afternoon (Nov. 22) and put the game easily away with a final score of 34-18.  The boys will advance to play for the tournament championship on Sunday, November 29  against division rival Holy Family.  Be there at 7:30 to cheer them on.

They look forward to their next game on Wednesday (11/25) at 7:20 p.m. against Divine Child.

JV Girls #1 (Coach Jim Ottinger)

The girls are rebounding from a tough loss to Our Lady of Victory (12-22) in the opening round of the St. Robert Bellarmine Thanksgiving Tournament.  They will certainly come back on Tuesday (11/24) at 6:45 p.m. with a will and a plan to defeat division rival Holy Family in the consolation bracket of the tournament.

The girls apparently kept the coaches out of their seats early in the game and entertained their parents with some typical first year miscues like winning the tip-off but not knowing which direction to head for their basket.  They quickly settled in and executed their newly acquired skills and offensive and defensive drills defeating Cabrini in a stunning 21-10 victory to begin their CYO careers and the first round of the St. Sebastian Tournament.  They will go on to play against a division opponent on Wednesday (11/25) at 5:00 p.m. before heading straight to the St. William Rollerskating party at Bonaventure in Farmington from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (Yes, that is a plug—I don’t know the cost but it is very reasonable and lots of fun.  All of our CYO kids are invited to this PSA-sponsored event)

The Week Ahead in Basketball: November 15-22

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Thank you to all our parents and players for making this year’s team pictures the most complete we have had in several years—only two players were unable to make their team picture.   We would like to take the opportunity to encourage you to have your child at all team practices and scrimmages and games.  If your schedule prevents you from getting your child to practice on time, please talk to other parents or your coach—the coaches will be happy to help you find carpooling options.  One of the important lessons our children learn from participating in team sports is that each member of the team, like each member in the body of Christ, is indispensable to the whole no matter what gifts great or small they bring.  We must each exercise our gifts to the fullest for the benefit of the community.  As the season goes forward, the routines of basketball practice may not seem as appealing as other opportunities which compete for our children’s time and we need to remind them of the importance of carrying out their commitment.

PRACTICE  CHANGES

ALL Teams will practice at their regular times EXCEPT:

Varsity Girls will NOT practice on Wednesday  (Thanksgiving Tournament Game at St. Robert v. St. Valentine at 6:15 p.m.)

JV Boys #1 will NOT practice on Friday (Thanksgiving  Tournament  Game at St. Sebastian v. St. Joseph, Lake Orion at 7 p.m.)

Varsity Boys #2 will probably practice in one of the above open time slots

JV Girls #2 will probably practice in one of the aboveopen time slots

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 @ 6:15 pm SRB Tourney: Varsity Girls v. St. Valentine (next game either 11/22/09 at 1:15 pm or 11/27/09 at 7:00 pm)

The Week Ahead in Basketball: November 8th -15th

Monday, November 9th, 2009

The season seems to be off to a good start with our children getting in some solid practices and adapting to the routines and expectations of their coaches rather quickly.  The team mass at 9:00 a,m. mass was wonderful! Thanks to all the parents and the players for arriving early as requested.  We received many positive comments on our teams, their appearance, and participation in the mass.  All of our players and parents should know how much they edify the rest of the worshipping community and reinforce their faith when we (particularly our children) participate so fully and visibly in this celebration of faith.  All of the help with coffee and donuts after mass and the players patience and courtesy is waiting to eat donuts until the end of the line was greatly appreciated.

This week all teams will practice at their regular times at St. William Activity Center with the singular exception of the Varsity Boys #1 team whose Friday night practice has been cancelled by coach Dulzo.

There will be extra Saturday practices for:

JV Boys #1 on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Varsity Boys #1 on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon

JV Boys #2 will scrimmage at St. Patrick, White Lake from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Skills Clinics

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (November 11, 12, 13) from 3-4:30 p.m. and

Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The Friday and Saturday skills Clinics are the only skills clinics open to Intramural players

ALL skills clinics are open to all CYO players.

It will be impossible for us to offer skills clinics every day without parent volunteers.  We need at least 2-3 adults to schedule a clinic.  If any parents are available to help, please let us know.  We don’t necessarily need coaches to run the clinics (though that would be nice) but 1 or 2 adults to be in attendance to support the coach/director running the skills clinic and assure a safe level of supervision.

Team and Individual pictures will again be taken by JL Photo. All teams are scheduled for THIS Wednesday, November 11, 2008 beginning at 5:30 p.m.. Order forms will be distributed at practice this week  The team schedule is as follows:

The Week Ahead in Basketball: November 1st – 8th

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

We have gotten a quick start to our CYO Basketball season here at St. William as team rosters have been delineatated and practices are now underway.  The first couple of weeks of the practice season can be a bit stressful as the directors, coaches, parents, and players settle into a new routine.  Try to be patient with your directors as we try to catch up on the spate of paperwork and calendaring this first week.  We have nearly all required paperwork in and should have it completely organized in the next few days so that we can focus on supporting our coaches and players and keeping parents well-informed of all the goings–on of the program.  The week of November 1-November 8 will be among the most trying weeks of the season for the directors, coaches, and parents.

PRACTICE  LOCATION  CHANGES

There are three days in the coming week that we do not have our regular use of the gym at St. William:

V     Monday, November 2, 2009 is All Souls Day. While this is not a holy day of obligation, it is a solemn feast of remembrance for those souls who have gone before us.  A “Mass of Remembrance” is celebrated at St. William (7:30 p.m.) followed by a reception in the north side of the Activity Center.  For this reason, we have secured Meadowbrook Elementary School gym for the JV Boys #1 (6:00-7:00 p.m.), the Varsity Girls (7:00-8:15 p.m.), and the Varsity Boys #1 (8:15-9:30 p.m.  Players attending the “Mass of Remembrance” should let their coaches know if they will not be at practice.

V     Wednesday, November 4, 2009 the Dads’ Club will be hosting coaches and athletic directors from around the diocese for dinner and the Winter Sports Meeting.  As the Activity Center will be unavailable, we will again have practice at Meadowbrook Elementary School gym for the JV Boys #1 (6:00-7:00 p.m.), the Varsity Girls (7:00-8:15 p.m.), and the Varsity Boys #1 (8:15-9:30 p.m.)

V     Thursday, November 5, 2009 is the St. William Football Banquet (CYO City Runner-up champions).  We have again secured Meadowbrook Elementary School gym for Coach Dykstra’s Varsity Boys #2 (7:30-9:30 p.m.).  ALSO using MEADOWBROOK on Thursday, will be Coach Ottinger’s JV Girls #1 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Meadowbrook Elementary School is located on the east side of Meadowbrook Rd. just south of 13 Mile Road.  Enter off of 13 Mile Rd and drive around the right (south) side of the building to the large parking lot.  The gym is located at the back of the school.  Please walk your child in and wait with them until the practice is underway.  Arrive a few minutes early to wait inside for their practice to end.  Please be especially courteous of others and respectful to school personnel and the building. For a google map, click here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=Meadowbrook+Elementary+Novi&fb=1&gl=us&hq=Meadowbrook+Elementary+Novi&hnear=Michigan&cid=0,0,14870191069872392369&ei=JinsSqrLOpCsMeuSnIQM&ved=0CBMQnwIwAw&ll=42.508782,-83.455625&spn=0.003757,0.006791&t=h&z=17

LIMITED  SKILLS CLINICS  BEGIN

We will begin holding skills clinics from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. this week on Tuesday, November 3 & Friday, November 6 ONLY! These skills clinics are open to any current St. William CYO basketball player.

INTRAMURALS  BEGIN

Our first weekly (Sunday) practice will get underway next Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 1:15 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. in the Activity Center

PROGRAM MASS

Our Team Mass for ALL CYO basketball players and their parents will be celebrated at the 9:00 a.m. mass on Sunday, November 8, 2009. Fr. Michael will be celebrating the mass and reserving all but the first several rows on the left side of the church.  2-3 rows  will be reserved for each team and their families.  Team members will sit on the center aisle end of the pews with family sitting on the outside aisle.  We will begin with a player-led rosary at 8:35 a.m..  Please arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. Reserving the entire north half of the church is difficult—the earlier we fill the pews the easier it is to redirect other worshippers to the south side.  We must begin the rosary promptly at 8:35 a.m. to complete in time for mass.  We will select several players to take up the gifts—let us know if your child would like to be considered.

We are here to praise the Lord of all creation, the Savior who has redeemed the world from sin and death, and the One who sustains us in all things through the gift of His spirit:  Please dress to acknowledge His great goodness and to give witness and edification to the rest of our community.  We would like our young men to wear a shirt and tie for this team mass; young ladies should wear a modest dress or similar outfit.  Participate fully by responding and singing loudly.

At all masses there will be a canned food drive at the offeratory.  Please bring a canned or non-perishable item to carry up to the altar at the offeratory.

We have included a pdf file on how to pray the rosary.  It would be a great help if you could print copies for your family and recite the rosary together one day this week in preparation for Sunday’s rosary.  Bring your printed copy with you if you can.

The CYO Basketball Program will host coffee and donuts after mass.  Players should wait until all other parishioners have had coffee and donuts before going through the line (Its good etiquette for a host/hostess)  We will have plenty of donuts!  For those players who have Religious Education classes after mass, we suggest going into the kitchen to get a donut on the way to class.  We could use a couple of volunteers to set up for coffee and donuts around 8:00 or 8:15 and then leave after communion to prepare for the after-mass crowd.

TEAM PICTURES
