CYO Athletics at St. William Parish

Todd March 21st, 2010

The St William Dads’ Club is proud to sponsor and support the CYO Athletic Program at St William.  ALL Parishioners of St William that have kids in grades 3rd through 8th are encouraged to take a look at what the CYO Athletic Program has to offer.  Our Fall Volleyball program has grown to four teams for the girls in the 4th thru 8th grade. Each year they all play in tournaments and have a regular season schedule.  The Freshman, JV,  and Varsity Football teams are open to 3rd thru 8th graders.  Last year the Varsity Football Team played in the City CYO Championship game at Ford Field.   Our Intramural Basketball program is open to all 2nd thru 4th graders, this gives the young player a chance to develop their skills and learn the game of basketball in a relaxed come-when-you-can-program.  The CYO Basketball program is for the boys and girls in 5th thru 8th grade.  This past season, once again, the Varsity Boys qualified for the CYO play-offs and many of our team played in additional tournaments over the course of the season. Our CYO JV and Varsity Baseball teams are ready to kick off their 4th season.  The cost for each participant is very reasonable considering the quality of play in each sport.  Most sports are only $60 per player, which includes uniforms and equipment.  Plus, the Dads’ Club provides scholarships for those in need- – we want each child to have an opportunity to play in a sport.  Find out more about CYO Athletics on our website at www.saintwilliam.net or contacting the Athletic Director, Todd Diffenderfer at AD@saintwilliam.net or 248-881-3132.

Incredible Baseball Game

bugsoup April 15th, 2009

JV Captures Second Place

On March 31 2009 there was an unbelievable baseball game for the boys Junior Varsity Championship of the Detroit Resurrection Tournament. The two teams of St. William and St. Clare were in an intense match up. The wind blew hard, the temperatures were low and the players were cold. The fans stood there frozen in their chants and very supportive. The game had back and forth action but the end was the most amazing. In the top of the sixth inning the Crusaders knew they had to hold St. Clare to win. They got their three outs and excitedly ran back to the dugout anxious to bat so they could help their team. They had the score 6-2 they were down and needed runs. The Crusaders scored a run and caused St. Clare to change pitchers. The Crusaders still couldn’t be stopped Matt Goerss made a hit with bases loaded to bring in another run. With 2 outs and men on 2nd and 3rd a Crusader runner stole home. The bench went crazy and the game was close, 6-5 now. Griffin Ogg was up to bat and hit the ball right to the first basemen who tagged him out. It was over the Crusaders lined up to shake hands. St. Clare’s coach asked “why we still have to bat the score is tied 5-5”.

When St. William heard this they ran back to their bench to get ready for the bottom of the seventh inning. They ran out and got to their positions and were ready to put this into extra innings. The first batter hit a fly ball in foul territory next to third base and was caught out by Leo Nardicchio. St. Clare loaded the bases and still had only one out. The fielders were afraid to make a big mistake. The St. Clare batter hit a fly ball into right field but Nick Detorre made a great catch and threw the ball into first base (Matt Goerss) who tagged out the runner trying to tag-up first base, and for the third out. But the umpire made his decision that the St. Clare runner was in before the 3rd out and they had won. It was a Truly Incredible Baseball Game. (By Don Lochbiler)

CYO Baseball

bugsoup March 24th, 2009

Spring has finally arrived, and with it comes the CYO baseball season. We are fielding two teams this year, one each at the Varsity and JV level. The varsity team will be coached by Mark Wolter and Brian Wolschlager, the JV coaches are Doug Ogg and Matt Goerss. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of these individuals and all our volunteer coaches, without them and the many long hours spent on the field we would not have a successful athletic program. The season opens with both teams participating in the CYO Resurrection Tournament in Detroit starting March 29th. Check the Dad’s Club website and the bulletin for updates.

St.William Cagers Improve Record & Thrill Crowd

Tom Convery January 6th, 2008

On Friday evening and Saturday, St. William hosted seven (7) CYO basketball games, posted five (5) wins, and outscored opponents 179 to 129. All seven games were exciting and thrilled spectators as three were decided in the final minute of play. As is always the case with our home games, our fans were well-fed on our Crusader BurgerTM, french fries, hot dogs, hot pretzels, nachos, and the rest of the seemingly endless variety of food turned out by Mr. Chris Lada and his dedicated kitchen crew (Basketball Concession Menu). If you haven’t come to Saint William hungry on a Friday night or Saturday of a home game weekend, you owe it to yourself and your family to come out on Friday, January 18 or Saturday, January 19 and enjoy a fantastic meal and some great basketball action.

The weekend opened with an inspired and ever-improving 7th/8th Grade Boys team hosting Dearborn Sacred Heart. The Crusaders took an early lead, but Sacred Heart rallied after half-time in an exciting game. Coach McDonald and his team secured a 32-25 victory in the end to improve their league record to 2-3.

Our varsity girls team followed the boys taking on one of the CYO’s top teams, St. Mary-Wayne. Our girls were outsized and unable to contain the undefeated St. Mary team as they suffered their second loss of the season.

Friday night finished as our other varsity boys team dominated the visiting St. Colette team in a 39-20 victory which maintains their undefeated division record.

Our junior varsity boys were warming up by 8:15 Saturday morning as they focused on their game against Westland St. Damian. It was an exciting game which saw the Crusaders employ both man-to-man and zone defenses to contain their opponent. After several hot and cold streaks and lead changes, our 5th/6th graders suffered their first loss of the season (21-25).

Diminutive though they might be, the JV Girls #2 team comprised of 4th and 5th graders dominated the hardwood Saturday morning. The girls outshot and out rebounded the Our Lady of Victory team in addition to outhustling them as they ammassed a 13 point margin of victory (16-3) over the cougars and improved their division record to 3-1.

Coach Dulzo’s cagers certainly came to play Saturday morning as they, like the JV girls ahead of them dominated their St. Colette opponent. It was a game which saw key contributions from every member of the roster in the 40-9 rout which improves the JV Boys #1 record to an impressive 4-1.

The best game of the weekend was the last game at 1:00 pm when the JV Girls (5th/6th graders) took on St. Mary (Wayne). In a game which saw scoring streaks from both sides, the Crusaders remained stalwart in their “to-the-wire” victory — the first of many more division play wins for this steadily improving squad.
