2012 Lenten Fish Fry Season Makes Historic Start

The plans were laid, the truckloads of food on order, the equipment made ready, and the workers were signed up for their shifts on Wednesday when the word came down that presidential hopeful Rick Santorum was planning to visit the St. William Dads’  Club Fish Fry on Friday night.  The news increased the excitement which surrounds the event which most of us anticipate almost as much as opening presents on Christmas morning.    The former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate greeted nearly 1,000 people at the St. William Dads’ Club 24th annual Lenten fish fry.   “I love the smell of fish on a Friday night,” Santorum told the crowd, saying he appreciates the respect it showed to the tradition of fish fries.  Santorum spoke for about a minute, then walked around theSt. William Activity Center and visited the kitchen, greeting fans and taking several photographs. He also signed dozens of signatures on books, paper, body parts and clothing.

In addition to feeding a presidential candidate and hosting dozens of reporters and photographers from local and national television, radio, and newspaper media, the opening night of the 24th annual Lenten Fish Fry also earned noteworthiness as 1,105 dinners were served eclipsing the record nights recorded last year.  Fish fry chairman, Dennis Goebel was pleased with the results and (pleasantly) surprised  as always that the volunteer staff can continue to serve record numbers of delicious meals.

Kari Ziegler has captured the typical excitement of our Fish Fry as well as some of the added spectacle which Rick Santorum brought to the event:
